Little Hands Art Club - First Aid Policy

At Little Hands Art Club, the safety and well-being of all children in our care is our top priority. We are extremely thorough in our risk assessments for every session and we ensure our activities, materials and tools present minimal risk to the club members.

We are committed to providing a safe environment and ensuring that appropriate first aid procedures are followed in the event of an accident, illness, or injury.

1. First Aid Provision

  • A member of staff with a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid and First Aid at Work qualification will be present at every session.

  • Our first aider is trained to respond to a wide range of incidents, including cuts, bruises, allergic reactions, and more serious emergencies.

  • A fully stocked first aid kit is kept on site at all times, stored in an accessible location.

  • Our first aid supplies are regularly checked and restocked.

2. Responding to Illness or Injury

In the event of an accident or medical concern:

  • First aid will be administered promptly and appropriately.

  • If the injury requires medical attention beyond basic first aid, we will contact parents/guardians immediately.

  • In an emergency, we will contact 999 and arrange for emergency services to attend while continuing to care for the child.

  • Parents/guardians will be informed of all incidents, including minor injuries, at pick-up time.

3. Recording and Reporting

  • All accidents, incidents, or illnesses are recorded in our Accident & Incident Log.

  • The record will include:

    • Child’s name

    • Date and time of the incident

    • Details of the injury/illness and the action taken

    • Signature of the staff member who provided first aid

  • Parents/guardians will be asked to sign the log to confirm they have been informed.

4. Medical Information & Consent

  • Parents are required to provide up-to-date medical information about their child, including allergies, medical conditions, and any medication they may require.

  • Written consent from parents/guardians will be required before staff administer any medication, except in emergency situations where medical professionals are involved.

  • We ask parents to keep us informed of any changes to their child’s health.

5. Managing Allergies & Medical Conditions

  • Upon book parents must inform the club of any children with allergies or medical conditions.

  • If a child has an EpiPen, inhaler, or other essential medication, parents must provide clear instructions and consent for its use.

  • We maintain a nut-free policy to reduce the risk of allergic reactions.

6. Hygiene & Infection Control

  • Staff will follow strict hygiene procedures when administering first aid, including wearing disposable gloves when treating injuries involving bodily fluids.

  • All equipment used in first aid treatment will be safely disposed of or cleaned appropriately.

7. Staff Training

  • All staff responsible for first aid will hold an up-to-date Level 3 paediatric first aid qualification and First Aid at Work qualification.

  • Training is refreshed regularly to ensure staff remain confident and competent in their skills.

8. Emergency Contact Procedure

  • In the event of a serious incident, we will:

    • If necessary, we will seek urgent medical support by calling 999.

    • Contact the child’s parent/guardian.

    • If unavailable, we will contact the designated emergency contact.

9. Parent Notification

  • Parents/guardians will always be informed of any first aid treatment given during the session.

  • For minor injuries (e.g., small cuts or grazes), parents will be updated at pick-up time.

  • For more serious concerns, parents will be contacted immediately.
